Why Are Oral Surgery Procedures Needed During Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic appliances like braces and clear aligners rely on proper tooth and jaw positioning to be effective. In some cases, oral surgery is required to:

  • Access and guide impacted teeth into position
  • Improve jaw stability for precise tooth movement
  • Remove soft tissue that interferes with alignment
  • Reduce treatment time or increase predictability of results

These procedures are often minor, but they play a crucial role in achieving a healthy, well-aligned bite.

Common Surgical Procedures to Support Orthodontics

Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs)

TADs are small titanium anchors placed in the jawbone to provide a stable point from which to move teeth. They act as fixed anchors to apply force without relying on other teeth.

Why TADs are used:

  • Provide control in complex tooth movements
  • Allow orthodontists to move teeth in ways not possible with braces alone
  • Often reduce the need for more invasive jaw surgery

TAD placement is a quick and minimally invasive in-office procedure performed by Dr. George Soung using local anesthesia.

Expose and Bond for Impacted Canines

Impacted canines, especially upper canines, may fail to erupt normally and remain trapped beneath the gum or bone. The expose and bond procedure involves uncovering the tooth and attaching a small orthodontic bracket so your orthodontist can gradually pull it into place.

This procedure helps:

  • Ensure proper tooth alignment
  • Prevent damage to adjacent teeth
  • Avoid long-term bite and spacing issues

Dr. Soung works in coordination with your orthodontist to ensure precise placement and optimal healing.

Frenectomy

A frenectomy is the removal or modification of the frenulum — a small band of tissue connecting the lips, tongue, or cheeks to the gum. An overly tight frenulum can restrict movement and interfere with orthodontic progress.

Frenectomies are often recommended to:

  • Eliminate gaps between front teeth
  • Improve tongue mobility (tongue-tie)
  • Reduce speech or feeding difficulties
  • Prevent relapse after orthodontic treatment

We use advanced techniques to ensure minimal discomfort and fast healing.
